My career in affordable housing began at the Boston Housing Authority in 1995. At the time, I was a young mother and could not have imagined how my role as a Resident and Property Information Specialist would shape the trajectory of my professional journey.

Early in my career, I had the pleasure of working with Tom Santry and Paula Saba, who guided me through the fundamentals of housing programs. I gained hands-on experience across all aspects of Section 8 housing, including FSS and other HUD programs. In those days, our department would close for a day and a half just to process HAP payments — manually separating checks and stuffing envelopes for mailing. It’s incredible to reflect on how far the industry has come.

In 2000, I relocated to Atlanta and joined the Atlanta Housing Authority as a Senior Budget Analyst for Section 8 Housing. I had the privilege of working under the leadership of Renee Glover and Janice Stewart. Janice, in particular, played a pivotal role in my development — encouraging me to pursue professional certifications, including the Nan McKay Section 8 Executive Management program. Even when I doubted myself, she recognized my potential and pushed me to grow. I remain deeply grateful for her mentorship.

Five years ago, I interviewed with Jeff Cook and was offered the opportunity to join Emphasys Software as an Implementation Consultant. In this role, I partner with clients to implement the MyHousing suite, bringing with me decades of industry experience. My background allows me not only to understand the technical aspects of the product, but also to appreciate the real-world impact it has on housing agencies and the communities they serve. I take pride in building strong relationships with our clients and providing guidance they can trust.

In my role at Emphasys, I’m able to bring not just my experience, but a deeper sense of purpose to the work I do with our clients and the communities they serve. At 60, I’m also a proud grandmother to two beautiful grandchildren, Zahra and Nasir. The joy and light they bring into my life is truly immeasurable, and they remind me every day why this work matters.

The Five Questions:

    1. Most used app on your phone? Don’t laugh… TikTok. It’s a great source for everything from recipes to exploring new hobbies, and I’m continually impressed by the creativity people share from around the world.
    2. If you could be somebody else at Emphasys for a day, who would you be? I’d have to say Jeff Clair, especially since I’m working toward my PMP. He’s always prepared, keeps everyone on track, and has a skill set I really respect. He’s been a great addition to our team.
    3. If you had an extra hour every day, what would you do with it? Easy… I would spend it with the grandchildren, outside and enjoying the warm weather.
    4. The zombie apocalypse is coming; who are three people you want on your team? 1. My daughter. She has been secretly preparing for such an event and her knowledge would be valuable. Plus she has my grandchildren. 2. My good friend Brooke. He is a “prepper” and has everything one may need. 3. My best friend Veronica. She is a wound care nurse!
    5. Favorite ice cream flavor? Always and forever, Chocolate Chip, especially from Brigham’s Ice Cream in Boston.
