After two decades of exceptional service, Andrea Hartt is embarking on a well-deserved retirement at the end of the month. Her journey at Emphasys has been marked by innovation, commitment, and an unwavering dedication to both her colleagues and clients. We sat down with her recently to reflect on her career.

What originally brought you to Emphasys (or ECS, as it was called in those days)?

“I double majored in accounting and computer science in college. I always wanted to figure out a way to use both. The housing authority I was working for issued an RFP, and Emphasys came and did a demo. I really liked the product, and I really liked the people, so I sent the CEO a blind resume. We interviewed and the rest is history: I became the new accounting software product manager.”

As a testament to your dedication, you’ve been with Emphasys for 20 years. What appealed to you in your role?

“After a few years, an opportunity came for me to go on-site and assist a client with a huge 1099 problem. It required me to do some serious report writing and accounting research. As a former housing authority CFO, it was right up my alley. The project morphed into me getting an 18-month assignment as their contracted CFO, and it launched a new business unit for Emphasys doing Fee Accounting for clients that use our software. It was the opportunity of a lifetime.”

What project or accomplishment are you most proud of?

“I really can’t say there was any one project per se that makes me most proud. There were so many times when I was able to assist clients in making significant changes to their accounting offices, assist with staffing assessments, and make recommendations. I influenced the acceptance of new business processes and assisted staff in gaining confidence in their work and themselves through accounting, HUD regulations, and software training. It was all very rewarding. It is my hope they, too, found it equally rewarding.”

What advice would you give to someone just starting here?

“It might not be advice, but I tell all new hires, ‘You’re going to love it here. It’s the only place I can think of where we can do our “nerdy work” and have such a profound and positive impact in so many cities and for so many families across the US.’”

Are there any coworkers or mentors who had a big impact on your journey?

“It’s hard to single out any one of my coworkers as they all are amazing, smart, fun, and dedicated people to our work, our clients, and to each other. I have always enjoyed our interactions, love their professionalism, and each time take away a new lesson to use or share with others.”

Any funny or unforgettable team moments you’d be willing to share?

“You mean other than Bingo Bob? I think it was when I was on-site with a client, which happened to be the week of my birthday. They threw me a party! I’m talking cake and decorations. It was a sweet and unforgettable gesture that warmed my heart and brought tears to my eyes.”

What are your plans for retirement? Any travel, hobbies, or adventures lined up?

“Nothing particularly grandiose. Travel, travel, travel. I’d like to get a few projects done around the house and get into a new routine that is engaging and fun.”

Is there something you’ve always wanted to do that you’re finally going to pursue?

“I would like to be more involved in my own community, so I plan on seeking out opportunities that align with my knowledge and my passions. And one day, I’d like to use my passport!”
