After more than two decades of service and a career that produced over 100,000 lines of production code, lead developer Bob McFarland will be retiring from Emphasys Software at the end of the year. Bob has played a defining role in the evolution of our products and our development culture, leaving an impact that will be felt for years to come. We are deeply grateful for his commitment and contributions, and we wish him every happiness in his well-earned retirement.

We sat down with Bob recently to get his thoughts on his career and what’s next.

What originally brought you to Emphasys (or MLS/ECS, as it was called in those days)?

“For the first 20 years of my career, I worked as a developer for two large corporations and later for a major contracting firm. While these roles provided financial stability, I was seeking an opportunity with a smaller organization where I could have a more meaningful impact on the products and contribute more directly to their success.”

What appealed to you in your role?

“Greater ownership of projects and features and closer collaboration with decision-makers.”

What project or accomplishment are you most proud of?

“Ultimately, the most rewarding aspect of my work has been delivering fixes or enhancements that truly make a difference for clients. Every time I was able to positively impact their experience, I considered it one of my greatest accomplishments.”

What advice would you give to someone just starting here?

“Be patient and always dig in and make sure you have covered all your bases before moving forward with a solution.”

Are there any coworkers or mentors who had a big impact on your journey?

“Over my 22-year career, I’ve had the privilege of working with many outstanding people. If I were to highlight a few, Kevin Schworm stands out for his dedication and thoroughness (that’s the long and short of it!). And Lisa Dove, both as a client and later as an Emphasys employee, was a joy to collaborate with. She consistently offered honest feedback while remaining open to our perspective, which made working together truly rewarding.”

Any funny or unforgettable team moments you’d be willing to share?

“I think the time Delia and I were stranded in Detroit Metro airport coming home from the Nashville User Conference and at 3AM, finally getting the smallest rental car I have ever seen, and driving 4 1/2 hours home. I’m not sure she opened her eyes once and just prayed I would get us home!”

What are your plans for retirement? Any travel, hobbies, or adventures lined up?

“Nothing huge planned. I have my hobbies…golfing, fishing, bowling and camping are all things I will get to do more often! We do plan to finally take a trip overseas, maybe on one of those river cruises.”

Is there something you’ve always wanted to do that you’re finally going to pursue?

“I think that is yet to be determined. At this point, I just look forward to a simpler life and then see where that leads me.”
